Kenrick Christopher’s Gift of a Day was two-part. He wanted to be mobile and he
wanted to visit the zoo…something he never had the chance do. So, Crossroads put
it into high gear to find an organization that would donate an electric wheelchair,
and they did. The wheelchair was sleek with an advanced design, but Kenrick still
wasn’t mobile because the chair needed a battery. Not to fear, Crossroads raised
the funds to pay for the battery, and Kenrick was finally ready to roll.
A Crossroads social worker and a few volunteers began planning part two: the Atlanta
Zoo! This trip wasn’t as easy as it sounded because Kenrick’s wheelchair did not
fit into his sister’s car and there was no public transportation nearby. So, Crossroads
put their thinking caps on again. The solution? Put the wheelchair in social worker
Kristin Frazer’s SUV, and meet Ken and his sister at the zoo.
When they arrived at the zoo, Kenrick went wild, freely navigating his way around,
making friends, and smiling for the camera. He had an incredible ability to connect
with people…and animals. Next, it was time for lunch. But not just any old lunch,
a picnic lunch made especially for Ken by volunteer Kathleen Brown...including dessert.
Ken had a sweet tooth, so the gooey, homemade chocolate cake was the perfect way
to top off the day.
It was a beautiful day literally, and figuratively, and a good time was had by all.
Upon returning home, Kenrick’s final comment of the day was “So when are we going
to the Aquarium?”
