Medical Records Clerk Staff Spotlight: Jamie Gerard

undefinedDriven to Make a Difference

Jamie Gerard joined the Kansas City team at Crossroads Hospice in 2008. Before Crossroads, Jamie served as an administrative assistant at a loan company, but wanted to turn her passion for making a difference in the lives of others into a full-time job. A hospice supported Jamie and her family through each step of their journey when Jamie’s mother passed away several years before. When Jamie’s sister, a nurse, told her about Crossroads, she knew it was the perfect opportunity to support patients, families, and the compassionate people who care for them.

As a member of the medical records staff, Jamie maintains all patient information, and manages the flow of phone calls from patients, family members, and facilities to keep members of the clinical staff up-to-date. She’s developed a strong knowledge of hospice regulations to maintain accurate patient records, and ensures that all office processes are running smoothly and efficiently.

Above the Call of Duty

To Jamie, “doing more,” means going above and beyond to serve patients, families, and fellow staff as a total team player. “If someone asks a question, you do what it takes to find the answer. It means doing more than what might be in your job description because that is what a patient or a loved one needs when they call. You don’t hesitate.”

In one case, a family reached out to Jamie for assistance with securing a certificate from a funeral home after their loved one had passed away. She knew the signatures that were required, and worked with the funeral home to finalize the certificate, saving the family time and stress during a difficult time.

A Second Family

Jamie’s commitment has been recognized not only by patients and families, but by the Crossroads Hospice team. In 2011, her fellow staff members recognized Jamie as the “Employee of the Year” at the Kansas City site, noting her upbeat attitude, determination, flexibility, and commitment to supporting her department and the entire team.

Jamie considers her fellow Crossroads staff members to be her second family. “We would do anything for each other,” she said. “Each week I hear the stories from our staff in the field about how they serve our patients and support each other. It feels so good to help people and know you are serving them through such a tough time. You know you are playing a part in touching lives. It is such a blessing.”
