Two Country Music Divas, One Unforgettable Gift

undefinedCountry music fans know her as the Queen. Listeners know her as the girl from small town Kentucky with a diva’s presence and ten number one albums. Crossroads Hospice patient Dorothy Rogers knows her as hero and now, can count her as a supporter.

Rogers has been a lifelong fan of Loretta Lynn, one of country music’s most prolific stars. The 77-year-old, under care with Crossroads Hospice in Kansas City, has visited Lynn’s childhood ranch and met with her daughters and husband, all in the hopes of getting up close to her hero.

Rogers knows every song by heart. It’s not unusual for her care team to find her doing a Lynn impression along with her records. That’s why there was only one way to make Rogers’ perfect day a reality.

With the help of Crossroads staff, Rogers sat in the fifth row of a Lynn concert at Kansas City’s Uptown Theater. Tracy Bunch, the coordinator for this “Gift of a Day,” wasn’t satisfied with just providing the greatest night of her patient’s life. After the concert, Bunch got a hold of Lynn’s assistant and they had the superstar sign an album “To Dorothy.”

“Dorothy has wanted to see Loretta Lynn in concert for a lifetime and I am glad we were able to make that happen,” says Bunch. “She said it was her dream come true and her family thought we went above and beyond for our patient.”

After this “Gift of a Day,” Rogers has a night to remember and the autograph to prove it. She was finally up close to the woman she’s idolized for years. There’s got to be a song in there somewhere.
