Civic-Minded Spirit Drives Volunteer

It’s no secret that some volunteer positions are flashier than others. Playing music, writing life journals, sewing quilts: These are highly-visible positions that can garner a lot of attention. Other volunteer jobs, however, are quieter. They rely on the endless determination and reliability of dedicated volunteers who will do whatever is asked of them. Whether it’s filing or answering the phones, these simple tasks are absolutely vital to the mission of Crossroads—and these volunteers are just as important.

Tweedle Lawrence is one of those volunteers. For the last two and a half years, she has been serving the patients and staff of Crossroads with her quiet compassion and steadfast commitment to do whatever is necessary.

A graduate of Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, Tweedle has had a full life before offering her time and talent to Crossroads. She received her undergraduate teaching certificate at Fisk University in Nashville and went on to secure her Masters in Teaching from Xavier University back in her hometown of Cincinnati. When she entered the workforce, she taught all over the world, including Germany, Washington D.C., Cincinnati and Princeton.

After her successful teaching career, she was employed by the Ohio Department of Education as part of a unique teacher licensure program.  She supervised a staff of more than 100 individuals, who were trained to analyze new teachers after they were hired on a provisional license.

In addition to her volunteer work with Crossroads, Tweedle keeps very busy with a wide array of other community activities. She is an active member of her church community at St. Andrew’s Episcopal, where she manages the ushers. She also serves as one of 25 ambassadors for the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and as a  member of the Women’s Alliance, Inc., which promotes cultural activities, education, and financial assistance to the underserved. As a member of Girlfriends, Inc.,Tweedle provides books for students at the University of Cincinnati and supports several scholarships.

Though her thirst for civic involvement is quenched through her participation in all these organizations Tweedle still has time for her biggest mission: spending time with her teenage granddaughter. She is dedicated to working with her granddaughter to ensure she understands social issues, has a strong spiritual background and shows a compassionate spirit to others.

We think Tweedle’s doing a great job of teaching by example.
