61st Wedding Anniversary is Gift of a Lifetime

undefinedWhen Robert Collins met his wife decades ago, he never imagined celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary together. In fact, he couldn’t imagine making it to a major milestone just last year, feeling fortunate enough that his health allowed him to experience their 60th anniversary.

As the date for their anniversary approached again this year, the 81-year-old held out hope that he would be able to celebrate with the woman who had been by his side for so long. Thanks to Crossroads’ “Gift of a Day” program, the Cameron, Missouri residents had the chance to do just that. For this Gift, the former Ford factory worker and Vietnam War POW wanted something simple: enough energy to take his wife to lunch at their favorite restaurant, Cheddar’s in St. Joseph.

“I was so enthralled with this couple’s story. It was a joy to see them celebrate so many years of marriage,” said Toi Hunt, the Gift of a Day Coordinator for the Crossroads Hospice Kansas City site. “Mr. Collins was working at a restaurant next door to his future mother-in-law’s business. She set him up with her daughter and the rest is history.”

As an extra treat, the couple was joined by their sons, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. Sometimes, it’s the simple things in life that can mean the most.
