Heroes Abound in Kansas City

undefined

Neal Adams is a world-renowned comic book artist known for his work on Superman, Batman, and the Green Lantern, among other superheroes.  But at the recent Kansas City Comic Con, he played the hero for Crossroads Hospice patient Aaron Murphy, 36.

Aaron is a huge comics fan.  An artist himself, Aaron haunted comic book stores and drew comics until his multiple sclerosis worsened.  But his condition didn’t prevent him from attending the Comic Con, where he not only met Adams, but received a personalized drawing by the artist featuring Aaron with the Green Lantern, Aaron’s favorite superhero.

Tracy Bunch, a volunteer coordinator with Crossroads Hospice in Kansas City, helped arrange the meet-and-greet with Adams and the surprise rendering of Aaron and the Green Lantern by the artist as part of Crossroads Hospice Gift of a Day program.

Aaron’s mother, Debbie Murphy, said that she could tell in his eyes that he enjoyed himself at the Comic Con and more so because  he was able to spend time with her and his uncle.  And when he received the drawing, she said, “He thought that was totally cool. His eyes lit up and he had this smile on his face.”

Gifts of a Day are inspired by Jim Stovall’s novel, “The Ultimate Gift.” Blind from age 29 due to a degenerative eye condition, Stovall went on to become an International Humanitarian of the Year, a national Olympic weightlifting champion, Emmy-award winner, world-renowned author and speaker.
