Honoring Her Mom's Memory as a Hospice Volunteer

Volunteer Susie Curtis and little Pomeranian Twinkie are on a mission.

Susie had been living in St. Louis and working as a teacher when she found out her mother needed to go into a nursing home. Susie quit her job and moved to New York to spend the remainder of her mom's life taking care of her. About five years ago, Susie's mother passed away from dementia.

During the end of her mother's life, a local hospice team was there to support Susie and her mother. Appreciative of the care they provided, Susie vowed to give back and become a hospice volunteer when she had the opportunity.

Becoming a Hospice Volunteer

Susie joined Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care as a hospice volunteer in January. Since that time, she's embraced the Crossroads Green Team spirit and has been a constant presence at special occasions, Gift of Day events, and visiting patients.

This week, Susie was finally able to bring her dog Twinkie with her to volunteer as a pet companion. Twinkie had a very special relationship with Susie's mom, and the two spent many days cuddling in bed together. Now, Susie and Twinkie are bringing that same puppy love to visit our patients in her mom's honor.

"It was so amazing to see how excited she was and how much it meant to her to be able to do this in honor of her mom," says Colleen Dietmeyer, Volunteer Manager for Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care.

Thank you to Susie and Twinkie for all that you do as a hospice volunteer for our patients.
