Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It typically begins gradually and symptoms can vary from person to person. Some will initially have trouble holding an object or occasional stumble, while others experience a change in the vocal pitch or slurring of words. These symptoms increase over time until ultimately the individual experiences muscle weakness and paralysis.
