The Longest Day - How You Can Participate

the longest day alzheimers

For those caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, every day is the longest day. Each year on the summer solstice, the Alzheimer’s Association holds The Longest Day events around the world from sunrise to sunset to fundraise and honor individuals and their caregivers who are facing this disease.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and 16.1 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. Family, friends, and other unpaid caregivers provide an estimated 18.4 billion hours of care. 25% of dementia caregivers are caring for a parent and children under the age of 18.

All of this adds up to take an incredibly emotional, physical, and financial toll for caregivers.

Every day, we see the impact Alzheimer’s disease has on our patients and their caregivers,” says Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care Executive Director Tamara Moreland. “The Longest Day is an opportunity to honor their courage in facing this illness.
