Safe Ways to Celebrate Mom This Year

mothers day covid

Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, and it’s a chance to recognize and appreciate the role your mother has played in your life. This year, it will be our second pandemic Mother’s Day, and you’ll want to keep CDC guidelines in mind as you plan safe ways to celebrate.

New Guidelines for the Fully Vaccinated

For those who are fully vaccinated, things are looking up. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after the one dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine or two weeks after their second shot of a two-dose vaccine.

Fully-vaccinated people can unmask at small outdoor gatherings or dine at an outdoor restaurant with other fully-vaccinated family and friends from multiple households.

Fully-vaccinated people should continue to avoid large in-person gatherings and continue to wear a well-fitted mask in indoor public settings and when spending time indoors with unvaccinated people.

Even when fully vaccinated, immunocompromised people should discuss these guidelines and whether additional precautions are needed with their healthcare provider.

Other Ways to Celebrate Mom

If you are unvaccinated or have unvaccinated family members in your household or if you’re too far away to celebrate mom in person, there are still ways to safely celebrate with her on Mother’s Day.

Most moms simply want to connect with their children and spend time with family on this special day. If that can’t happen in person, a phone call or video chat can be a lovely way to catch up on Mother’s Day.

If you live nearby, but can’t visit in person, consider dropping off gifts, pastries, or even mimosas that you can enjoy together, but separately, while on the phone or gathered for a Zoom call.

While many people have grown tired of Zoom, there are ways to make it special and fun. Virtual classes in flower arranging or cooking have flourished during the pandemic. These give you and your mom the opportunity to do an activity together that you can chat about afterwards.

If you have young children, be sure to harness their creativity in your Mother’s Day celebrations. Handmade cards, signs, and chalk messages will show special moms just how much you all love them.
