EvenMORE For You

“Life is not a mystery or riddle to figure out. Life is meant to be experienced to the fullest. Helping others who can’t help themselves is one of the great experiences in life.” – Perry Farmer

    The Paradox of Growth

    By: Danny Gutknecht
(1 minute and 15 seconds to a better life at work)

Why are we constantly pushing for growth? We want our companies to grow and our children to strive and grow. Will we ever reach a point where we feel fulfilled with what we have?

Our desire for growth is a psychological projection. A projection is a way to avoid aspects within ourselves by "projecting" them onto someone or something else. We project the best and worst parts of ourselves to avoid the anxiety of dealing with what we desire to grow within ourselves.

    The Paradox of Growth

(1 minute and 15 seconds to a better life at work)

Why are we constantly pushing for growth? We want our companies to grow and our children to strive and grow. Will we ever reach a point where we feel fulfilled with what we have?

Our desire for growth is a psychological projection. A projection is a way to avoid aspects within ourselves by "projecting" them onto someone or something else. We project the best and worst parts of ourselves to avoid the anxiety of dealing with what we desire to grow within ourselves.

Why do we want to grow? Psychologists have found that something deep within us wants to express our unique set of potentials - a journey that frequently involves growth.

Why do we choose to project growth onto our organizations? The reality is that organizations do a lot of things for us. They create a sense of community. They solve complex problems in our communities that we can't solve alone. And, believe it or not, they improve the quality of our collective existence.

But can they contribute to our sense of fulfillment? No, and yes. Companies have to create value and make money if they are to exist. Answering the call to your journey requires inner work, a path we must navigate alone.

Yet, here lies the paradox: while personal growth is a solitary endeavor, it also relies on our connections with others - connections are vital to helping us understand ourselves better.

For one's personal journey, companies can provide resources to live; they also offer one of the last remaining places in modern society where we engage in disciplined rituals that create the necessary tensions for personal and collective growth. We can measure it, and with good leadership, we can see how our contribution makes a difference.

This paradox might not have to be a paradox at all. By working towards unlocking our inner selves and companies' full potential, we can create Meaning for ourselves, our communities while helping the environment we’ve chosen to work in, grow.
