Crossroads honors veterans at nursing home visit
Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care Services co-sponsored a veteran recognition celebration Monday afternoon inside Laverna Village of St. Joseph.
The 12 veterans at the St. Joseph nursing facility received dog tags and a personalized certificate. All of the 40-some residents who attended were treated to song, poetry and treats.
George Fox, Crossroads chaplain, opened the celebration with prayers and led the gathering in a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before reading some military-themed poetry.
“We like to do them in nursing homes and facilities where the veterans can’t get out and partake in the city’s activities so we bring the recognition to them,” she said.
Kelly Summa, Laverna Village administrator, said the residents enjoy the veterans’ celebration.
“This really means a lot to them. They’re used to being out in the community,” she said.
Granville Harrison, a Navy man who served in both World War II and Korea, said he enjoyed the celebration as he sang along to “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
“I’m honored,” he said.
The ceremonies are part of Crossroad Hospice’s “Honor Our Veterans” recognition campaign, said Thompson.
“Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care recognizes veterans every year,” she said.
