Who qualifies for pulmonary hospice care?
Hospice care may be appropriate for people with advanced lung cancer or other serious respiratory illnesses when treatment is no longer effective or the focus has shifted from curing the disease to improving comfort and quality of life. Patients are generally eligible for hospice when a physician determines they have a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness follows its expected course.
Common signs that hospice may be appropriate include:

- Increasing shortness of breath, even with oxygen therapy
- Frequent hospitalizations or emergency room visits for respiratory complications

What to expect during compassionate ventilator withdrawal.
Before withdrawal from life-sustaining ventilator support:
- Initial family meeting to provide educational support regarding pulmonary hospice care for patients/families
- Collaboration with physician regarding patient and family wishes
During withdrawal:
- Presence of physician, nurse, respiratory therapist and hospice chaplain as needed
- Medication and equipment to ensure patient’s comfort
After withdrawal:
- Continuous care to ensure ongoing comfort of patient
- Early bereavement support
