World War II Veteran Thanked With Memorial Tour on Gift of a Day

The men and women who contributed to our country’s World War II efforts are often referred to as “The Greatest Generation.” Their sacrifices in the name of protecting our freedoms are still seen as a gold standard of patriotism and service to others. This dedication to service is epitomized by John Atkinson, an 83-year-old resident of The Gardens at Barry Road Assisted Living in Kansas City.

The Nevada, MO native is a veteran of the Coast Guard, a role that took him overseas to Japan at the end of World War II. When he returned stateside, he continued his career of service as a Missouri State Highway patrol officer. For his Ultimate Gift, Crossroads staff arranged to have him picked up by a current highway patrol officer and driven in his cruiser to visit the 217 foot tall Liberty Memorial tower. Upon arrival, Atkinson was given a tour of the adjacent National World War I Museum and thanked personally for his service. It might be impossible to repay Atkinson for a life dedicated to protecting the freedoms that most of us take for granted, but this gift was a good start.
