Retiree Makes the Most of his Time

undefinedMost people think of retirement as a time to slow down and relax. Not Don Twellman. When he stopped selling cars, he used his newfound free time to become a full-time volunteer. Don spends four days a week from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. volunteering at his church. With his remaining time, he splits his hours between St. Luke’s Hospital and Crossroads Hospice.

St. Louis Volunteer Manager Elizabeth Nelson knew Don from her days working in the church office, and when she moved to Crossroads Hospice, Don came along for the ride.

Liz is so nice. If you want to volunteer, she’ll take the time to show you exactly how to do things,” he says.

Concerned about becoming too close to patients, Don agreed to work in the office.

I’m an emotional guy,” he confesses.

At Crossroads, Don volunteers in our office making packets of information for nurses and CNAs. The work he does means that their time can be spent primarily on patient care.

The support of volunteers like Don – whether in our office or out visiting patients – is a huge benefit to the work of Crossroads Hospice. In just 45 minutes, volunteers can assist with office work, read scripture to patients, help with light housekeeping or play a game of cards.
