Words of Encouragement: Memorial Day Edition

Memorial Day, for me, is a day of humility. I live in a great country with unparalleled freedom. I didn't earn that freedom. I wave a flag striped in red reminding me of the sacrifice of those who paid for my freedom. In the Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln honored fallen soldiers by acknowledging "they gave the last full measure of devotion." Indeed, to die for one's cause is the ultimate act of devotion.

It is the wonderful custom of Crossroads Hospice to offer a Veteran's Recognition to all who served in the US military. As a Crossroads Chaplain, leading these recognition ceremonies are as rich and personally meaningful as any wedding or funeral I have performed. And always in my mind and heart as I stand in front of living veterans, how I wish I could personally thank those who gave “the last full measure of devotion.”

The absolute minimum I can do is not just celebrate my freedom, but humbly remember those who sacrificed their freedom. And I have my own devotion, too – to be diligent in thanking our living veterans who stood on the line to keep America free. Let's join together in being devoted to that.
