3 Ways to Commemorate Memorial Day

vietnam memorial

This weekend, the United States will commemorate Memorial Day. Viewed by many as the unofficial start of summer, families and friends often mark the day with picnics, BBQs, or a trip to the beach. But this patriotic holiday is set aside to honor the men and women who died while serving in the military. It’s a solemn occasion in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Below, we have three of the best ways to celebrate Memorial Day that pay tribute to these American heroes.

3 Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day Respectfully

While it’s fine to gather with friends to celebrate the approach of summer, take some time on Memorial Day to actively remember members of your family, community, and country who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

  1. Join in the National Moment of Remembrance.

The United States Congress officially created the National Moment of Remembrance in December 2000. This annual event asks Americans to pause for one minute at 3 p.m. local time to remember those who have died in military service to the United States. At this time, Amtrak conductors sound one long whistle and many churches ring bells.

  1. Pay your respects.

Most communities have monuments and memorials honoring local servicemen and servicewomen who lost their life in service to our country. Visit these memorials or join in a local Memorial Day service in their memory.

  1. Share their stories.

Do you have a relative who died in military service? If so, share their photo and story on social media. If you don’t have a personal connection to those who died in the military, research those from your community who died while serving the country and share what you found on social media so others can learn more about them.

Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care would like to recognize all those who died for our country’s freedoms this Memorial Day. We thank you for your service and your sacrifice.
