Acceptance Leads to Better Understanding of Alzheimer’s Patients

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." — Albert Einstein For those of you caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease, does this quote strike a chord? Meet Mr. Music Man

Each year, our Kansas City location names a Volunteer of the Year from the Kansas City, Gladstone and Warrensburg locations. This year, the award was presented to our very own “Music Man,” Jim Haney. After retiring in February 2011, Jim joined the Crossroads Volunteer Team because he wanted to focus on giving back to others. His lifelong passion is music, specifically playing his guitar and singing. Jim has dedicated the last two years to performing in several facilities in Lee’s Summit, Independence and Blue Springs. Each week, he hauls his microphone, guitar, amp and stool to bring comfort to Crossroads patients by singing American tunes, childhood favorites and more.

There Is No Substitute for the Life-Saving Gift of Blood Donation

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, less than 10 percent actually do. According to the American Red Cross, blood donations dip twice a year: during the summer and during the winter holiday season. NOW is the time to give the gift of life. “People are traveling more, shopping, visiting with loved ones and during the winter months, it only takes two or three inches of snow to impact our ability to collect blood locally,” says a Red Cross spokesperson.

January is National Blood Donor Month

Honor blood donors, sponsor blood drives and encourage others to give. January is the perfect time to honor the people who help others through the simple act of giving blood. Since 1970, January has been known as National Blood Donor Month. It’s a time when blood organizations like the Community Blood Center (CBC) pay tribute to the nearly 140,000 people in the Kansas City Region who give blood each year, and encourage others to start the New Year off right by coming to give the gift of life.
