Gift of a Day

We develop unique plans of care that include a Gift of a Day, our special program inspired by author Jim Stovall’s popular book “The Ultimate Gift.” Since its inception, we have helped thousands of hospice patients experience the perfect day. That day is based on the question: “If you had one perfect day, what would it look like?” Our staff members, volunteers and local businesses work together to bring these perfect days to life for our hospice patients.

A Miniature Horse Named Blue Spreads Good Cheer

After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years during the Vietnam conflict and being honorably discharged, Ronald Gore enjoyed a long manufacturing career at Timken a maker of “bearings, gear drives, automated lubrication systems, belts, chain, couplings and linear motion products.”

When he wasn’t working at the factory, Ronald enjoyed riding his motorcycles and being outdoors caring for animals. He held a great affection for horses saying they were the “noblest of all creatures.”

For his Gift of a Day, Ron wished to have one last experience with a horse. His care team at Crossroads went to work coordinating a visit from Blue, a friendly, affectionate miniature horse who wears special shoes inside and carries a tote bag.

Blue’s owner Avery brought him to visit Ronald as part of her outreach ministry of visiting the ill and homebound, many in end-of-life care. Naturally sociable and calm, miniature horses have soft coats and manes that are perfect for petting and cuddling.

Perfect describes Blue’s quiet visit with Ronald. And when their visit was over, Blue visited other residents in his long-term care facility, quietly spreading compassion and warmth to others in the cutest, sweetest way.
